On January 8th, during the 2025 Banff Pork Seminar, Dr. Yolande Seddon was named the Research Chair in Swine Welfare! Fourteen Canadian pork industry partners have committed more than $1 million over five years to extend the critical research role of a swine welfare chair at the University of Saskatchewan, speaking to their unified commitment to swine welfare and behaviour research! The objectives for the Research Chair in swine welfare are currently being developed, so check back soon for updates!

Biomarkers of Welfare
Results from this project indicate pigs with ‘enhanced’ enrichment increased lifelong ADG and were easier to handle at eight weeks. Piglets with pre-weaning lameness had increased cortisol:DHEA ratio in hair, suggesting this could be an objective measure of individual welfare.
